Pickup-car accidentkills Warren man, 39
WARREN -- A Warren man is dead after the car in which he was a passenger collided with a pickup truck Wednesday afternoon.
John Jackson, 39, was killed after Vanessa Eggleston, 41, of Warren, who was driving south on Niles-Warren River Road, lost control of the car and went left of center into the path of a northbound pickup truck driven by David Holmes, 26, of Warren, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
Eggleston was in serious condition and Holmes in stable condition today at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital. The accident occurred a half-mile south of Dover Street at 5:16 p.m. after a storm made area roads slushy.
Girard man facesstalking, other charges
GIRARD -- A 40-year-old Girard man is facing a number of charges, including stalking, after his arrest Wednesday night.
Philip T. Brink of Illinois Avenue was to appear later today in municipal court on charges of menacing by stalking, carrying a concealed weapon, driving under the influence, failure to control his vehicle, having a fictitious license plate and obstructing the plate. He is in the Trumbull County Jail.
The complainant, who also lives on Illinois, told police that Brink had been calling her repeatedly and threatening her life. She called police about 11:30 p.m., telling them that Brink was in his car in her driveway.
When police caught up with Brink, he refused to take a blood-alcohol test, had a knife on him and his license plate was covered with plastic.
Extra cop patrols
NILES -- Police officers will conduct extra patrols through the holiday season, looking for traffic violations on all major routes.
With extra funding from the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program, Niles police will also concentrate on reckless drivers and drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The STEP grant is provided through the Ohio Department of Safety, Governor's Highway Safety Office.
Weathersfield trustees
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township trustees will meet in executive session at 3 p.m. Friday to discuss personnel and to interview two applicants for a position on the township zoning commission for a five-year term. Harlan Collier is resigning from the board at the end of this year.
Attacked with a knife
NILES -- A 42-year-old McKinley Towers man told police he was attacked by an unidentified man wielding a knife.
The victim said he was walking to McQuaid's gas station on Morse Street at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when the attack occurred. The report said the man refused medical treatment, but it did not say how serious the injuries were or where they were.
Robbed outside bank
WARREN -- An employee with McDonald's, 2891 Elm Road N.E., told police that someone snatched the deposit bag before she dropped it into the bank deposit.
The employee said a woman took the undisclosed amount of money around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Cars' tires slashed
NILES -- When employees of Hanna's Auto Repair on Robbins Avenue returned to work this week, they found someone slashed several tires on vehicles in the parking lot.
Police reports say the business was closed Friday through Sunday, but when workers arrived Monday morning they discovered the damage to six vehicles left at the shop for repairs.
Burglary charges
GIRARD -- Police have charged two city men with burglary after their arrest at a house early today.
Keith L. Davis of Plymouth Avenue and Raymond M. Battaglia of Shannon Road were scheduled to be arraigned later today in municipal court.
Police received a call alerting them that a burglary was in progress at an East Broadway Avenue home shortly after midnight.
Authorities said they found Davis in the back yard of the house, which had a broken window. They said Davis admitted breaking the window and boosting another man into the house. Battaglia then surrendered without incident.
