Mathieu, Roser earn honors as Titans
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College men's soccer standouts B.J. Mathieu, a senior defender, and Matt Roser, a junior forward, were named to the 2002 NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region third team, as selected by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Mathieu, a four-year letterman and starter, led the Titan defensive effort as the team's sweeper. He led a defense which allowed less than a goal per game (21 goals in 22 games).
Roser, a three-year starter and letterman, led the Titans in assists (nine) and ranked second on the team in goals (nine) and points (27), including four game-winning goals. He ranked second in the Presidents' Athletic Conference in assists, fifth in points and sixth in goals.
Westminster finished the 2002 season 16-4-2 overall, 12-0 in the PAC. The Titans earned their first-ever NCAA Division III tournament bid, falling to eventual national runner-up Otterbein 2-0 in an opening-round game.
Game changes
POLAND -- Poland High's boys basketball game against Canfield has been moved from Jan. 3 to Jan. 4, Poland athletic director Myron Stallsmith said.
The JV game begins at 6 p.m.
The reason for the Jan. 3 conflict is the Fiesta Bowl between Ohio State and Miami.
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The Mathews at Springfield Local boys basketball game originally scheduled for Jan. 3 will be played on Jan. 2, due to the Fiesta Bowl.
On Jan. 2 the girls basketball game starts at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.
Speed skater to race area hockey players
BOARDMAN -- Australian speed skating champion Emily Rosemond will race against the best hockey skaters from Boardman, Canfield, Poland, Mooney-Ursuline, YSU and the Phantom rockets between periods of the Phantom rockets-Traverse City game Sunday at 4:30 at the Ice Zone.
Mooney-Ursuline ties Avonworth
PITTSBURGH -- Phil Colucci scored an unassisted goal with 1:14 left to pull the Cardinal Mooney-Ursuline High hockey team into a 7-7 tie with Avonworth Tuesday at the Island Sports Complex.
Colucci finished with three goals while Jake Secich also had three goals with two assists to lead Mooney-Ursuline (4-1-2). Art Stoner also had a goal for the winners.
Mooney-Ursuline, now 3-0-1 in the league, plays Massillon Jackson High in a Northeast Ohio Hockey League game on Friday at 9 p.m. at the Ice Zone.
HOF nominees sought
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio High School Football Coaches Association is looking for Region 8 nominations of area coaches for induction into the hall of fame.
Region 8, directed by Mooney athletic director Don Bucci, includes Mahoning and Columbiana counties.
The nominee must be at least 55 years old or retired.
Nominations, along with a resume, should be sent as soon as possible to Bucci at Mooney High School, 2545 Erie St., Youngstown, Ohio, 44507.

Jaret Wright signs with San Diego
SAN DIEGO -- Jaret Wright will try to resurrect his career in San Diego after agreeing to a $725,000, one-year contract with the Padres.
San Diego also agreed to a $1.3 million, two-year contract with free-agent infielder Dave Hansen.
Kentucky's Morrissheads to Baylor
WACO, Texas -- Guy Morriss is leaving one rebuilding job for another.
After turning around Kentucky this season, Morriss is set to take over as head coach of a Baylor football program that fields one of the worst teams in the Big 12 Conference.
The 51-year-old Morriss resigned from Kentucky and will be formally introduced at Baylor during a new conference Wednesday.
College football HOFinducts 15 players
NEW YORK -- George "Sonny" Franck, the former All-America tailback at Minnesota from 1938-40, was one of 15 former greats inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
The other players are Auburn split end Terry Beasley, Princeton running back Cosmo Iacavazzi, Arizona St. receiver John Jefferson, Southern Cal safety Ronnie Lott, Pitt's Dan Marino, Navy tailback Napoleon McCallum, Michigan guard Reggie McKenzie, Georgia Tech defensive back Randy Rhino, Texas tackle Jerry Sisemore, Kansas St. linebacker Gary Spani, Tennessee defensive tackle Reggie White and Missouri end Kellen Winslow.
Coaches are Yale's Carmen Cozza and Earle Bruce (Tampa, Iowa St., Ohio St., Northern Iowa and Colorado State).
