Last year: South Africa's Ernie Els and Retief Goosen won in Japan, beating Denmark's Thomas Bjorn and Soren Hansen with a par on the second hole of a playoff. Americans Tiger Woods and David Duval and New Zealand's Campbell and David Smail were eliminated on the first extra hole.
Last week: Harrington won the Target World Challenge, edging tournament host Woods by two strokes. Harrington earned $1 million. ... Jeff Brehaut won the PGA Tour qualifying tournament Monday in La Quinta, Calif. ... Australia's Peter Lonard won the Australian Masters for his second straight victory, beating countrymen Scott and Gavin Coles in a playoff. ... Zimbabwe's Mark McNulty won the Vodacom Players Championship in South Africa, holding off American Scott Dunlap by three strokes.
Notes: Mickelson and Toms, 2-1-1 together in the Ryder Cup, are making their first appearances in the event. They both played in the Target World Challenge, with Toms tying for eighth and Mickelson finishing 10th. ... The United States has won 23 of the 47 World Cups, the last by Duval and Woods in 2000 in Argentina. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus won in 1963-64 and 1966-67, and Fred Couples and Davis Love III swept the 1992-95 titles. ... The International Golf Association ran the event from its inception in 1953 as the Canada Cup through 1999. ... Casey was added to the English team after Nick Faldo withdrew because of an elbow injury. ... Cejka earned his PGA Tour card Monday, tying for second in the qualifying tournament. ... The 2003 event will be played on The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Format: Scramble. Nineteen father-son teams.

Last year: Raymond and Robert Floyd won the family's second straight title and fifth in seven years, closing with a 61 to beat Hale and Steve Irwin by a stroke. Raymond Jr. teamed with his father for the Floyds' first three victories.
Notes: Javier Ballesteros and Stefan Langer are 12, making them the two youngest players to compete in the event. Travis Wadkins was 14 when he made his debut last year. ... The 19 fathers have combined to win 71 major championships -- 17 Masters, 17 U.S. Opens, 20 British Opens and 17 PGA Championships. ... Jack Nicklaus II played at the University of North Carolina and is now a course architect. He caddied for his father in his 1986 Masters victory. ... Kevin Stadler won the Colorado Open in his pro debut, with his father serving as his caddie in the September event. ... Tom Watson tied for 45th last week in the Australian Masters.
