KENT -- Kurt Michaelis ran the fastest time in school history in the 1,000-meter run with a second-place time of 2 minutes, 28.23 seconds, to lead the Youngstown State track and field team at the Golden Flash Gala at Kent State Friday and Saturday.
Michaelis also finished 10th in the 3,000, while Jeanna Cunningham led the women, finishing fourth in the 400 (58.63) and 11th in the 200.
For the men, Ryan Petrick finished fourth in the 1,000 (2:30.75) and Nick Smith finished sixth (2:32). Jarrod Davis finished 12th in the weight throw.
Katie Krupko started off her freshman campaign with a seventh place finish in the 5,000 (18:55.88) and Laura Schatz came in seventh in the high jump with a jump of 1.60 meters. Leslie Johnson was 10th in the 400, Gina Mavrikis finished 11th in the 1,000, Lindsay Wojciak finished 12th in the mile and Aaliyah Gillespie came in 13th in the 400.
The Penguins return to Kent Jan. 10 for the Black Squirrel Classic.

Canfield loses 2
CANFIELD -- The Canfield Cardinal Hockey team suffered two setbacks recently, falling 4-1 to Notre Dame Cathedral Latin and 6-2 to Chagrin Falls.
Andy Davis scored in the NDCL loss, while Michael Vrable and Pat Anderson scored against Chagrin Falls.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Tickets are available to see the No. 1 ranked high school boys basketball team in the country play at Beeghly Center Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Oak Hill, Va., ranked first in the USA Today poll, will meet George Junior Republic in the feature game. The first game of the doubleheader sends Farrell against Franklin at 6 p.m.
Thursday on ESPN2, Oak Hill Academy plays Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary at Cleveland State.
One Oak Hill starter, Ivan Harris, a 6-foot-7 guard, is an Ohio State recruit.
Tickets are on sale at the participating schools and will be available at YSU the day of the game.

Sacramento Kings star Chris Webber, father Mayce Webber Jr. and aunt Charlene Johnson are charged with obstruction of justice and perjury. They are accused of lying to a federal grand jury about their dealings with ex-University of Michigan basketball booster Eddie Martin.

U.S. teamin qualifier
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The U.S. men's basketball team will play in San Juan, Puerto Rico, next August in the Americas Olympic qualifying tournament.
The U.S. team, which finished a disappointing sixth at the world championships in September, must finish among the top three to qualify for the 2004 Athens Games.
Martin faltersin final round
LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Cart-rider Casey Martin fell apart in the final round of the PGA Tour qualifying tournament, closing with a 77 and falling from 21st into a tie for 57th, which at least assures him of full status on the Nationwide Tour next year.
Winner Jeff Brehaut held it together for a 1-over 73. He finished at 16-under 416 and won $50,000 in the six-round tournament, one of the most grueling in golf.
None of the top 24 players going into the final round broke 70. The top 35 players and ties earned exempt status on the PGA Tour next year.

Seattle boatwins first race
AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- OneWorld Challenge drew some consolation from a troubled week when it won the first race of its best-of-seven semifinal against Prada of Italy at the America's Cup.
The win, by 47 seconds, put OneWorld on even terms with Prada, wiping out a one-point penalty imposed on the Seattle team by an arbitration panel for breaching the regatta's protocol.

MELBOURNE, Australia -- An injured left ankle has forced Martina Hingis to withdraw from the Australian Open, the season-opening Grand Slam tournament that she's won three times.
