DIV. III FOOTBALL Mount's rematch has final on line



The Mount Union-John Carroll winner will play Dec. 21 against either St. John's (Minn.) or Trinity (Texas).
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union and John Carroll will have their rematch in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Kickoff is Saturday at noon at Mount Union Stadium.
The Purple Raiders (12-0) defeated John Carroll (12-1) 35-16 on Oct. 19 at Mount Union Stadium before a record crowd. This is the second time the teams have met in the postseason; the Purple Raiders won 59-7 in a quarterfinal round game in 1997.
Mount Union leads the all-time series 15-2-2 and is 12-0-1 since John Carroll's 31-7 win in 1989.
Playoff ladder
The Blue Streaks have defeated Hobart 27-7, Muhlenberg (21-10) and Brockport (16-10 in overtime) in the playoffs. Mount Union has defeated Wheaton (42-21) and Wabash (45-16).
John Carroll is led by quarterback Tom Arth, who has completed 186-of-311 passes for 2,425 yards and 24 touchdowns. He has thrown just five interceptions.
Running back Ryan DeGeorge has rushed for 1,144 yards and 15 touchdowns. The leading receivers are Jeff Lerner (53 catches and 10 touchdowns) and Adam Therrien (50 catches and 13 touchdowns).
Lerner was named the Ed Sherman Award winner as the Ohio Athletic Conference's best receiver.
Defensively, the Blue Streaks are led by middle linebacker Chris Cubero, who has 134 tackles, including 24 for losses and 51/2 sacks. He was named the Bill Edwards Award winner, given to the OAC's best linebacker.
Outside linebacker Brian Brooke has 91 tackles, including 16 for losses, and free safety Scott Greenberg has four interceptions.
John Carroll averages 35.2 points and 373.8 yards per game on offense and is allowing 10.9 points and 250.2 yards per game.
Mount Union has won 10 consecutive playoff games and is 35-7 all-time. Purple Raiders' running back Dan Pugh is a Gagliardi Award finalist. He has rushed for 1,796 yards and scored 32 touchdowns.
Quarterback Rob Adamson has completed 115-of-191 passes for 1,977 yards and 24 touchdowns. The leading receivers are Randall Knapp (47 catches and nine touchdowns) and Josh Liddell (35 catches and four touchdowns).
Defensive leaders
On defense, Matt Campbell has 92 tackles, 22 for losses, and 11 sacks, and is the two-time Paul Hoernemann Award winner as the OAC's best defensive lineman. Outside linebacker Stan Watson (Austintown Fitch) has 81 tackles, including seven for losses.
Mount Union is averaging 45.8 points and 497.7 yards per game offensively and allowing 12.8 points and 237 yards per game.
The winner will play Dec. 21 in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the Div. III national championship, against the winner of the other semifinal between St. John's (Minn.) and Trinity (Texas).
