Two new roses honoring former President Reagan and his wife, Nancy, will raise money to carry on Reagan's work.
Rose company Jackson & amp; Perkins, which introduced the flowers in October, will donate part of the sales proceeds to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. The foundation promotes Reagan's "Four Pillars of Freedom" -- individual liberty, economic opportunity, global democracy and national pride -- and sustains the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, the Center for Public Affairs and the Presidential Learning Center.
The Ronald Reagan rose has red petals with white underneath. The Nancy Reagan rose has 5-inch blooms of deep apricot. Both are hybrid tea roses.
The roses are $24.95 each or three of one rose for $59.95. To order, call (800) 292-4769 or visit www.jacksonandperkins.com on the Web.
Sparking interest
Q. Sparks come out of two wall plugs in my house when I plug cords into them. What is happening? Is the problem loose wires in the plug, or is this a sign of a bigger wiring problem throughout the house?
A. The sparks probably are caused by plugging in an appliance that's turned on, said Bob Sallaz, a journeyman electrician and retired chief electrical inspector for Akron. If the appliance is turned off and the outlet still sparks when you plug the item in, the outlet is probably worn and needs to be replaced, he said.
Seal of approval
With today's technology, you don't have to be an experienced construction worker to guarantee yourself and your family a more than reasonable degree of comfort without paying excessively for it. Winterizing your home is far less expensive than the heating costs for a leaky house. G2
