Driver injuredin 2-vehicle crash
SALEM -- Alexander L. Apinis, 51, of 14798 Lisbon-Canfield Road, Salem, was in critical condition late Saturday with head injuries suffered in a traffic accident earlier in the day. He was flown to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center after being taken to Salem Community Hospital. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Apinis was driving north on state Route 45 in Perry Township about 3:20 p.m. Saturday when he attempted to pass William Irey, 63, just as Irey turned left into his driveway. His vehicle hit Irey's vehicle. Irey was treated at the Salem hospital. The accident is under investigation.
Condition worsens
YOUNGSTOWN -- The condition of a Salem fire captain who suffered a heart attack during a fire call has worsened.
Capt. Dennis Groves, 50, was in critical condition Saturday afternoon, according to Forum Health Northside Medical Center nursing staff. Sharon Cooper, a nursing supervisor, said late Saturday she could release no other information.
Groves was taken by ambulance to Salem Community Hospital from the 11:20 a.m. Friday garage fire on Arch Street in Perry Township. He was later flown to Northside.
A couple and a boy living in the house escaped without injury, but a family cat died, Perry Township fire officials said.
Anti-war rally
YOUNGSTOWN -- Those opposed to war in Iraq will begin marching at noon Tuesday from the rock in front of Youngstown State University's Kilcawley Center to the federal courthouses downtown. The protest march, which will be followed by a 12:30 p.m. downtown rally, is taking place on International Human Rights Day and is sponsored by Peace Action Youngstown and the Youngstown Student Peace Action Network.

YOUNGSTOWN -- YouthBuild of Mahoning County will cut the ribbon at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the home students have finished renovating at 2107 Ohio Ave. on the North Side. YouthBuild offers education, job training, counseling and leadership development to unemployed youths age 18 to 24. The students renovate dilapidated properties into affordable housing.
