DIVISION I-AA PLAYOFFS W. Kentucky upends W. Illinois



Villanova and Georgia Southern both advanced Saturday.

MACOMB, Ill. -- Peter Martinez kicked a 25-yard field goal with 40 seconds left Saturday as Western Kentucky rallied for 17 fourth-quarter points and beat Western Illinois 31-28 in the second round of the Division I-AA playoffs.
After Martinez's field goal, Western Illinois got the ball back and threw a desperation pass that Lawrence Matthews caught on the Western Kentucky 2 on the final play.
Western Kentucky, however, was called for pass interference on the play. After the 15-yard penalty, Western Illinois got one last play from the Western Kentucky 43, but Mike Scifres missed a 61-yard field goal attempt.
Villanova 24, Fordham 10
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Brett Gordon went 26-for-30 for 219 yards and two touchdowns, leading Villanova to a victory over Fordham in Division I-AA quarterfinal playoff action.
Gordon led the Wildcats on two long touchdown drives in the second half for Villanova (11-3).
He completed seven passes for 36 yards on a 14-play, 66-yard third-period march, capped by Terry Butler's 4-yard TD run with 38 seconds left in the quarter.
Ga. Southern 31, Maine 7
STATESBORO, Ga. -- Chaz Williams had his 10th straight 100-yard rushing game and ran for two touchdowns for Georgia Southern.
Jermaine Austin added 143 yards rushing, including a 7-yard TD, for the Eagles (11-2).
Jon Meczywor was held to 8-of-22 passing for 99 yards, a touchdown and an interception for Maine (11-3).
Williams had 106 yards on 27 carries.
