Increases in pupils
Public-school enrollment in kindergarten through grade eight rose from 29.9 million in 1990 to an estimated 33.6 million in 2001. Enrollment in the upper grades rose from 11.3 million to 13.6 million. Enrollment is projected to set records every year until 2005, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
