Grant for New Hope

Grant for New Hope
YOUNGSTOWN -- New Hope Academy has received a $15,000 grant at the request of the Kennedy Family Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Mahoning Valley.
The nonprofit, independent, ecumenical elementary school on Oak Hill Avenue uses donations to offer scholarship assistance to all pupils, who pay one-third of costs through tuition.
Chosen for Honor Band
CANFIELD -- Rick Kayyali, a Canfield High School senior, has been selected to perform in the 2003 Ohio Music Educators Association All-State Honor Band in Cleveland this January. His application was one of 88 selected from hundreds received. The tenor saxophone player is the son of Rick and Debbie Kayyali of Canfield. This is his third consecutive year playing in the band.
Reading program set
STRUTHERS -- The city school district will sponsor an after-school reading program Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 7 to Feb. 27 for elementary school pupils who have not passed their proficiency tests. The hourlong program will begin at 3 p.m., and transportation will be provided.
Fourth-graders took the reading portion of the proficiency tests in October and the number of pupils who passed was slightly lower than last year, according to a board of education newsletter.
AMP-Ohio scholarships
COLUMBUS -- Five $1,500 scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors through American Municipal Power-Ohio.
Nomination materials have been sent to member utilities and local high schools. Lyle B. Wright scholarships are available to seniors in households that receive electricity from an AMP-Ohio member; Richard H. Gorsuch scholarships are available to seniors who work or whose parent or guardian works for AMP-Ohio or a member.
Each member can nominate a student for each scholarship.
The student must have a grade-point average of at least 3.0 and write an essay on a public power topic. Interested students should contact their local utility office.
