NHL N. Jersey upends Penguins

Martin Straka scored Pittsburgh's lone goal in the 3-1 loss.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Defensemen Oleg Tvardovsky and Colin White scored, and Martin Brodeur made 20 saves Friday to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
John Madden scored an empty-net goal with 30.9 seconds remaining as the Devils earned at least a point in their sixth straight game (4-0-0-2).
Martin Straka scored for the Penguins, who lost their third straight.
Tverdovsky opened the scoring 29 seconds into the first period on a wrap-around goal.
Jeff Friesen shot from the right circle, and Jean-Sebastien Aubin blocked it into the air. Joe Nieuwendyk went for the rebound but could not control the puck. Tverdovsky swooped in, circled behind the net and tucked a backhander into the left side.
White gave the Devils a 2-0 lead in the second period, firing a shot from the left point, through a screen by Patrik Elias, that beat Aubin at 7:37.
The Penguins, outshot 12-6 in the first period, had nine shot in the second period. Their best scoring chance came early in the period, but Brodeur made a pad save on Alexei Kovalev's shot from the bottom of the left circle.
Straka ended Brodeur's shutout bid with 7:31 remaining. Mario Lemieux, the NHL's leading scorer, fed a pass to Janne Laukkanen, who fired on net from the left point. The shot deflected in off Straka, cutting the Devils' lead to 2-1.
Notes
Devils defenseman Scott Stevens played in his 1,540th game, tying Johnny Bucyk for seventh on the career list.
White played in his 200th game.
Kovalev, tied for second in scoring with Boston's Joe Thornton, played despite missing the last two days of practice. Kovalev was speared under an arm Tuesday in the Penguins' 4-1 loss to Washington.
The Devils have gone five games without a power-play goal and are 0-10 with the man advantage in that span.
