Player's motherdies in accident
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The mother of Green Bay Packers defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila was killed Sunday in a car accident the same day the football player became a father.
Bola Tito Anjorin Gbaja-Biamila, 53, was killed in Los Angeles when her car went out of control and struck a palm tree, then caught fire.
Broncos apologize
SAN DIEGO -- Denver Broncos guard Steve Herndon and coach Mike Shanahan apologized to San Diego Chargers defensive tackle Jamal Williams, whose season was ended by a questionable hit by Herndon on Sunday. Williams dislocated his left ankle and was put on the injured reserve list.
Moore to retire
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Receiver Herman Moore announced his retirement, knowing he had little chance of playing for the New York Giants and that the injury-riddled team needed his roster space.
The retirement is more a technicality, Moore said. He wants to play next season, and he didn't rule out the Giants.
Packer on I.R.
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Packers tackle Chad Clifton was placed on injured reserve, ending a season in which he was hurt on a blindside hit by Warren Sapp and faces a long recovery.
Not guilty
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The adoptive father of Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor was found innocent of an assault charge related to a scuffle with his son. Anthony Taylor, 43, could have faced up to five years in prison if he'd been convicted of aggravated assault with a firearm.
Stadium workcan continue
PHOENIX -- The Arizona Supreme Court has cleared the way for construction work to begin in earnest on the Arizona Cardinals' new stadium.
Brad Parker, a spokesman for the Tourism and Sports Authority, said the decision also gives the go-ahead to Cactus League baseball projects in Phoenix and Surprise and construction of a new youth sports facility.
New coach
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Wearing a tie accented with teal, Ron Wilson was hired by the San Jose Sharks, three days after the team fired Darryl Sutter and his two assistants.
Wilson, fired by Washington last May after five mostly successful seasons, spent four years as the first coach of division rival Anaheim.
Demands trade
CHICAGO -- Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Boris Mironov has left the team and demanded a trade. Chicago GM Mike Smith said Mironov will not be paid during his absence, and that the team will try to deal the defenseman.
LeClair out
PHILADELPHIA -- Flyers star John LeClair had shoulder surgery and is expected to be out 10 to 12 weeks.
Hockey hallinducts four
ST. PAUL, Minnesota -- Former Minnesota Gophers coach Doug Woog was among four men inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
Woog, who coached the Gophers for 14 years, was honored with former Harvard stars and Olympian brothers Mark and Scott Fusco and the late Joe Riley, a 1948 Olympian and standout at Dartmouth.

Lewis ripsformer lawyer
NEW YORK -- Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis took the witness stand and accused his former lawyer of helping a promoter who was "ripping me off."
Lewis was the last witness in a Manhattan federal court trial, in which he's accusing lawyer Milton Chwasky of allowing promoter Panos Eliades to siphon money from Lewis' expense account.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Deborah Renshaw will not ride with Rick Goodwin's Busch team next year after missing her first Busch start because of a crash in practice that killed a driver. Goodwin had planned to field a car for Renshaw starting in February at Daytona.
Betting lawsuit
WASHINGTON -- In the latest fallout over the Breeders' Cup betting scandal, a professional handicapper filed suit against the company that handles most of the nation's on- and off-track betting. Jimmy "The Hat" Allard, a California horse player, charged Autotote Systems with negligence.
