COLLEGE BASKETBALL Mount Union's 11-0 OT run defeats Titans; Hiram loses
Grove City and Baldwin-Wallace won while Thiel lost.
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Mount Union basketball team went on an 11-0 run in overtime to defeat Westminster 83-73 Wednesday in a men's non-conference game.
Tied at 66 after regulation, the Titans (1-4) took an early 69-66 lead in the extra period before the Purple Raiders' run.
Four Mount Union (4-0) players scored in double figures, led by Brad Gerard with a game-high 20 points, including six 3-pointers. Curtis Stevens added 17 points, while Aaron Brownsword scored 13 and Ron Paulasukas had 12.
Greg Foster (Ursuline) led Westminster with 19 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots. Sophomore guard Justin Crum (Mohawk) came off the bench to add 16 points and dish out a team-high four assists.
Pitt-Greensburg 86, Hiram 68
GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Terriers (2-3) struggled with shooting, making just 29-of-73 (39.7 percent), including 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) 3-pointers.
David Mayle, a senior, led Hiram with 14 points, while sophomore Allen Kirkpatrick added 13 points and a career-high eight assists and seven rebounds. Sophomore T.C. Spencer came off the bench to score 12 points.
Kevin Conlon paced Pitt-Greensburg (4-1) with 19 points, while Phil Grenda added 14 and Nate Watkins scored 10.
Grove City 70, Case Western 46
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Phil Bushre scored 17 points for Grove City, which is 4-0 for the first time since 1982.
Carson Oren scored 12 points for Case (2-5).
Baldwin-Wallace 76, Bethany 62
BEREA -- Baldwin-Wallace outscored Bethany 37-27 in the second half.
Bethany (0-5) trailed 39-35 at halftime, but tied the score at 44 with just 16 minutes remaining.
But a 12-0 rally gave the Yellow Jackets (3-1) a double-figure lead for good. The Bison made just 10 of 29 shots in the second half and committed 16 of their 25 turnovers.
Freshman Matt Drahos led Bethany with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Mike Majzun (Struthers) and freshman guard Josh Polantz each scored 14. Majzun is 51 points from 1,000 for his career.
Baldwin-Wallace had five players in double digits and was led by Jon Carroll with 17 points and 10 assists.
Allegheny 82, Thiel 81
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Junior Mike Banach scored a career-high 32 points in a losing effort.
Nick Cantazarite's free throw with four seconds remaining provided the Gators (1-4) with the winning point.
Daryl Moore's shot from beyond half-court went in, but officials ruled it came after the buzzer sounded.
Shane Manley (East Palestine) added 17 points for Thiel (2-4), while A.H. Davis (Boardman) scored 15.
Cantazarite led Allegheny with 24 points while Tyrrell Smith added 14 and Ryan Meerstein 10.
Walsh 79, Houghton 76 (OT)
HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Senior Jason Hamilton scored 25 points for Walsh (3-2). Jerome Sandifer and J.R. Ogletree, both added 14, Jimmy Moore had 11 and Lee Greer 10.
Jason Lee scored 25 points for Houghton, which shot 18-of-27 (67 percent) from the field in the second half to get back in the game. Walsh led 36-26 at halftime.
Women
BEAVER FALLS. Pa. -- Jen Rawding scored 14 points to help Geneva defeat Mount Union, 59-56.
Ali Cananzi also hit for 10 points for Geneva (7-2).
Allie Graf (Poland) had 11 points for the Purple Raiders (2-2).
Case Western 89, Thiel 51
CLEVELAND -- G'Ann Lauder, Jasmine Rowan and Amber Hammell evenly split 45 points for Case (4-1).
Thiel (1-4) was paced by Amanda Swanson with 13 points.
Capital 74, Allegheny 52
COLUMBUS -- Senior Danielle Meyer set a school and Ohio Athletic Conference with 13 steals in Capital's win. Capital had 30 steals for game, two off the school and conference record, and forced 37 Allegheny turnovers.
Meyer also scored 18 points, while Caitlin Carr had 15 in her first college start.
Raelynn Miles and Meredith McDonough each had 12 points for Allegheny (2-4).
