Campuses get money

Campuses get money
SALEM -- The state's capital improvements bill contains money for Kent State University's Salem and East Liverpool campuses.
The Salem campus will get about $1.5 million, and the East Liverpool campus will get $171,174, said state Sen. Greg DiDonato of Dennison, D-30th, in a news release issued Wednesday.
The release did not state what the money will be used for, and KSU spokesmen were unavailable this morning.
Generally, capital improvement funds are spent on renovations, the release stated.
Sale of building
LEETONIA -- Village council wants the Columbiana County Port Authority to handle the sale of the former Sky Bank building.
Village Administrator Gary Phillips said that in selling real estate, the port authority has fewer legal restrictions than the village.
He said the port authority could sell the building to people who make offers, similar to the way real estate agents work.
The village however, must take bids for the sale.
Phillips said the fair market value of the building has been estimated at $65,000 to $75,000.
Sky Bank officials sold the building to the village for $1 in 2001 after closing the company's branch office there. Village officials had hoped to use the building as a community center or move some village hall offices there -- ideas that proved to be cost prohibitive.
Stadium renovations
COLUMBIANA -- Crestview school officials plan to accept bids for stadium renovations in January.
The school board hired Hanahan-Strollo & amp; Associates Inc. of Youngstown on Wednesday to draw up the plans. The renovations will include new bleachers, restrooms and a rubberized, all-weather track, Superintendent John Dilling said.
He said the district can fund the project without any increase in taxes by earmarking 2 mills of a 5.43-mill levy. The two mills would generate about $160,000 annually for the project.
Dilling said he does not have a cost estimate yet for the work.
The board wants to replace the wooden bleachers of the stadium with aluminum ones set in concrete, Dilling said. The bleachers are about 40 years old, and the board has been concerned that they are a safety hazard.
