BIG TEN Virginia's fouls help Michigan St.



Minnesota escaped Georgia Tech, Wake Forest is 3-0 and N.C. State bounced Northwestern by 25 points.

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Chris Hill scored 22 points and Aloysius Anagonye added 10 points and nine rebounds as No. 21 Michigan State beat No. 22 Virginia 82-75 Wednesday in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge.
The Spartans (3-2) avoided their first three-game losing streak since the 1996-97 season.
The Spartans took control of the game with a 17-0 run -- holding Virginia scoreless for over six minutes -- that made it 33-19 with 4:19 remaining in the half.
Not coincidentally, the game's decisive burst began when Travis Watson was called for his third foul midway through the first half. The Cavaliers' leader in scoring, rebounding and assists had just 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting, six rebounds and no blocks.
Michigan State led by 11 at halftime and was up 59-41 midway through the second half.
Todd Billet had 28 points for Virginia (3-2) and Devin Smith scored a career-high 24.
No. 20 Minnesota 64,Georgia Tech 63
MINNEAPOLIS -- Rick Rickert scored 17 points, including the go-ahead turnaround jumper with nine seconds remaining. Jerry Holman added 21 points for the Golden Gophers (3-0).
Ed Nelson had 17 points and Chris Bosh added 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (3-1).
Wake Forest 90, No. 23 Wisconsin 80
MADISON, Wis. -- Josh Howard scored a career-high 31 points for Wake Forest.
Justin Gray added 20 points and Taron Downey 15 for Wake Forest (3-0), which made all 15 of its free throws in the second half, including several down the stretch to hold off Wisconsin (4-1).
Howard, Gray and Downey combined to go 13-for-13 from the line for Wake Forest, which was 17-of-19 as a team.
Devin Harris and Freddie Owens each scored 19 points to lead Wisconsin, which saw its 14-game home winning streak ended.
N.C. State 74, Northwestern 49
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Marcus Melvin scored a career-high 23 points and North Carolina State's defense forced 20 turnovers in beating Northwestern.
Melvin was 7-for-9 from the field and 5-for-5 from the foul line on a near-perfect night. The 6-foot-8 junior forward also tied a career high with four 3-pointers as the Wolfpack improved to 3-0.
Julius Hodge added 17 points as N.C. State shot 51 percent.
The Wildcats (3-2) averaged 12 turnovers in their first four games, but had that many with 15:24 remaining as their offense bogged down under the Wolfpack's pressure defense. Aaron Jennings led the Wildcats with 17 points.
