URock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland will sponsor a free book signing by Jimmy Scott from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 21 on the museum's Plaza Lobby stage. Scott will be signing the new book "Faith in Time: The Life of Jimmy Scott" by David Ritz. Scott, a jazz singer, was born in 1925 in Cleveland and sang with Lionel Hampton and Charlie Parker as well as recording an album with Ray Charles. He released his 16th studio album since 1955, "But Beautiful," in March. Ritz is a four-time winner of the Gleason Award for best music book of the year. His work also includes books about B.B. King and Marvin Gaye.
UBoardman High School's annual winter choral music concert, A Bit of Holiday Cheer, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Boardman Performing Arts Center. Opening the evening will be the traditional candlelight processional to "O Holy Night." Then the five choirs will perform holiday favorites as well as contemporary songs of the season with costumes, dancing and special effects. The concert will close with all singers' going on a "Sleigh Ride." Directors are Emily Slaven, Linda Taylor and Errol Kehrberg. The choreographer is Nick Opritza. UThe Youngstown State University Gospel Choir will perform its winter benefit concert, "'Tis the Season to be Blessed," at 7 p.m. Monday in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center on the YSU campus. Proceeds from the concert, featuring the YSU Gospel Choir Mime Team and others, will benefit the Mahoning Valley Salvation Army. Concert-goers are asked to donate either canned foods or articles of clothing at the concert. Representatives of the Salvation Army will be on hand to collect the items. One of Europe's great orchestras will perform next month at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. Hungarian Symphony Orchestra of P & eacute;cs will be led by Maestro Philippe de Chalender at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 in the college's Shafer Auditorium. The orchestra was founded nearly 200 years ago and today has 50 members. It will perform Rossini's "An Italian Woman in Algiers"; Weiner's "Divertimento No. 1"; Schubert's Symphony No. 5; "Hungarian Pictures," by Bartok; and Beethoven's Symphony No. 7.
