CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Brett Nelson's homecoming was a bust.
The Florida senior played before a hometown crowd for the first time in college but wasn't a factor Tuesday for the eighth-ranked Gators, who lost to West Virginia, 68-66.
Nelson started his first game of the season after returning last week from a stress fracture in his foot. He was limited to nine points on 3-of-13 shooting in 30 minutes.
"I'm a firm believer in the fact that every time you lace up the shoes and step across the line, there are no excuses," Florida coach Billy Donovan said. "He struggled shooting a little bit. I'm sure he would have liked to have won, to have played better, though."
Considered the best high school player out of West Virginia since Jerry West, Nelson drew the ire of former West Virginia coach Gale Catlett by announcing as a high school junior that he would play at Florida.
With West Virginia starting three freshmen and two sophomores, few people gave the Mountaineers a chance.
The Mountaineers (3-1) did it by breaking a full-court press and staying close, then getting a 3-pointer from Joe Herber with 50 seconds left to take the lead for good.
"I'm not going to make more out of it than anything else because I know how hard it is to win at this level. I don't care who you're playing," Beilein said. "This is a highlight in our season, but not the highlight of the season."
Freshman Joe Herber had 11 points, including the go-ahead basket with 50 seconds left, and the Mountaineers (3-1) overcame a nine-point deficit in the second half to beat a ranked opponent for the first time in six tries.
Matt Bonner had 18 points for the Gators (4-2), who were coming off a victory over then-No. 2 Kansas in last week's Preseason NIT consolation game.
No. 1 Arizona 91, Saint Louis 58
Jason Gardner made four of six 3-pointers and scored 16 points to lead the Wildcats (3-0). The senior guard is 11-of-17 on 3s in the first three games.
Josh Fisher scored 16 points for the visiting Billikens (1-3).
No. 3 Alabama 89, UNC-Greensboro 61
Erwin Dudley scored 18 points, Kenny Walker added 17 and Mo Williams had 13 points and seven assists as the Crimson Tide (5-0) tied a 31-year-old school mark with its 22nd consecutive home win.
James Maye led the Spartans (3-2) with 13 points, all in the first half.
No. 5 Pittsburgh 96, Norfolk St. 51
Julius Page scored 16 points to lead the Panthers (4-0), who led by as many as 39 in the first half.
Chakowby Hicks scored 10 for the visiting Spartans (1-2).
No. 11 Connecticut 116, Sacred Heart 78
Ben Gordon had career highs with 31 points and 10 assists, and Emeka Okafor had 19 points and 14 rebounds, his fourth straight double-double, for the Huskies (4-0).
Chris Assel had 15 points for the visiting Pioneers (0-4).
No. 18 Kentucky 84, High Point 64
