Howland fire is probed
HOWLAND -- Firefighters are investigating a fire that caused about $100,000 damage to a home at 1352 Westover Drive.
The fire broke out around 3 a.m. today. The homeowners escaped unhurt, but the couple's three pets died, firefighters said.
Public indecency
HUBBARD -- A Connecticut man has been ordered to leave Ohio after a public indecency conviction.
Mark Vitore, no age or permanent address given, was arrested on the charge Monday at Burger King on state Route 7 after he was found urinating in the restaurant.
According to police, Vitore refused to give his name or any information, so he was booked into the Trumbull County jail as John Doe.
During a court appearance Tuesday, Vitore identified and represented himself, was found guilty and was sentenced to five days in jail, with credit for time already served.
Smoking in boys' room
WARREN -- Police arrested two boys for smoking what they suspect was marijuana in a restroom at Warren G. Harding High School.
The boys were arrested around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and are to appear in juvenile court next week.
YMCA programs
NILES -- Eastwood YMCA is signing up participants for a Christmas Day Camp, a Parents' Night Out and Mini-Basketball.

Enrichment classes
LIBERTY -- Liberty High School is the site for three enrichment classes offered by the Trumbull County Career and Technical Center.
Landscape Design will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 6 through March 10. Cost of the 16-hour class is $60. There will be no class Jan. 20.
Perennial Gardening will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays from Jan. 7 through Feb. 11. That 12-hour class costs $45.
Sign Language will be offered Tuesdays from Jan. 7 through March 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The 20-hour course is $80. Call TCTC, (330) 824-2284.
Education fund-raiser
HOWLAND -- Trumbull County Educational Service Center's Environmental Education Program will have a birdseed fund-raiser from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Howland Township Park.
Different mixes and sizes are available to feed all kinds of wild birds.
Proceeds will benefit the Environmental Education Program, which conducts field trips for students to engage in hands-on nature study.
The park is at the north end of Rosegarden Drive, which is across East Market Street from Leo's Ristorante. Call Brice Harris, (330) 675-2800 ext. 120.
Another fund-raiser will be Jan. 18 at the park.
Recycling-litter grant
WARREN -- The Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District has received a $162,725 grant to develop or strengthen local recycling and litter prevention programs.
The grant is part of $6.9 million distributed to 96 communities statewide by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Solicitation arrests
YOUNGSTOWN -- A police crackdown on street-corner sex sales resulted in two arrests late Tuesday on the South Side.
Officers said they saw Guy F. Walker, 37, of Baylor Avenue, Austintown, driving past Belinda Kennedy several times.
When Kennedy, 33, of West LaClede Avenue, got into Walker's truck, police pulled it over on Oak Hill Avenue.
Both were charged with loitering to engage in solicitation.
Center's name updated
YOUNGSTOWN -- The name of Youngstown State University's Center for Urban Studies is now the Center for Urban and Regional Studies.
