Group to oversee Pa. 9/11 memorial
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A nonprofit organization has been formed to oversee the construction of a permanent memorial to the 40 passengers and crew who died on United Flight 93 in Somerset County.
A group representing the victims' families plan to make the official announcement Thursday and accept a $1 million check from Pa. state Sen. Jane Orie that will help fund the memorial.
The money comes from proceeds raised through Orie's "Hearts of Steel Bracelets Project." Nearly 100,000 of the bracelets have been sold.
The presentation will take place at the Pittsburgh Renaissance Hotel.
The donation will bring total funds raised for a memorial to more than $2 million, said Somerset County Commissioner Pamela Tokar-Ickes.
President Bush has signed legislation to create a national memorial at the site, which has attracted thousands of visitors.
Passengers are believed to have overwhelmed the terrorists on Flight 93, perhaps averting another attack on Washington, D.C.
