ICE HOCKEY Poland beats Boardman, Jackson in Ice Zone Tournament
North Canton Hoover won the Thanksgiving event beating Kenston in the title game.
BOARDMAN -- Brett Pitzulo netted two goals as the Poland High ice hockey team defeated Boardman 4-3 Saturday as part of the Ice Zone's Thanksgiving Tournament.
Poland also defeated Jackson, 2-1.
Boardman defeated West Geauga, 11-1, in its other game.
Canfield dropped two games, losing 4-0 to North Canton Hoover and 8-2 to Kenston.
In other action, Hoover defeated West Geauga, 6-3; Jackson shut out Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, 5-0; and Kenston defeated, CVCA, 9-5.
Sunday, Hoover defeated Kenston 7-3 to win the championship.
Poland 4, Boardman 3
C.J. Marino and Drew Souder also scored for the Bulldogs. Pitzulo, Mike Yatsco, Ken Toth and Robbie Wyand had assists for Poland. Goalie Cody Hiznay made 16 saves.
For Boardman, Mike Matter, Jim Pipoly and Bob Walla scored goals while Walla, Pipoly, Pat Rafeedie and Jonathan Poma made assists. Goalies Chris Collins and John Yuhaniak made 12 and two saves, respectively.
Poland 2, Jackson 1
Souder and Brett Cowan scored for Poland while Wyand and David Cornish had assists. Hiznay made 15 saves.
Jake Thomas scored for the Polar Bears on assists from Nathan Loudon and Tyler Murphy. Goalie Dan Schleichert stopped 28 of Poland's 30 shots.
Boardman 11, West Geauga 1
Walla netted six goals and two assists in the Spartans' romp. Pipoly and Rafeedie had two goals apiece while S. Fulks had one.
Rafeedie had three assists while Pipoly had two. Also recording assists were Poma, Jeff Lorimer, Tristan Lysowski and Frank Dovidio. Yuhaniak stopped 17 of West Geauga's 18 shots.
Michael Leore scored West Geauga's goal.
Hoover 4, Canfield 0
Goalie Ryan DeJoe stopped 36 shots for the Cardinals. Brian Bush, Andy Thewes, Glenn Ireland and Nick Novotny scored goals for the Vikings.
Kenston 8, Canfield 2
Jeff Kane scored both Canfield goals. Andy Davis, Josh Gestosani and Michael Vrable recorded assists. DeJoe had 17 saves and allowed seven goals while Chris Meditz made two stops.
Matt Krahe scored four of Kenston's goals and Andrew Kieta had two.
