City extends deadline in seeking new chief
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) -- Johnstown officials have extended to Dec. 13 the deadline to apply for the city's vacant police chief job.
City Manager Jeff Silka said only three people had applied for the job when the original deadline passed Friday. Silka said the deadline was extended so a national ad scheduled to run Tuesday in the International City Managers Association newsletter will have a chance to attract more candidates.
But Silka acknowledged the job may be harder than most to fill because of the police department's troubles and turnover in the chief's job in recent years.
William Clark resigned from the $45,000-a-year post in September, after denying allegations that he viewed pornography on his office computer.
Clark instead said he left because he couldn't find a suitable home that met the city's rigid residency requirements.
Clark had been hired to replace Robert Huntley, who resigned in March 2000 after several high-profile occurrences involving police misbehavior.
