TRAVEL SURVEY Britons ID foreign spots as tops in poll

LONDON (AP) -- When Britons dream of traveling, it's to anywhere but Britain, according to a new survey which dismayed local tourism executives.
America's Grand Canyon topped the list of 50 destinations chosen by viewers of the British Broadcasting Corp. TV's "Holiday" program, followed by Australia's Great Barrier Reef and Walt Disney World in Florida.
The closest place to Britain was Paris, at No. 27 on the list.
"It's disappointing, as the U.K. has got an equal range of things to see as anywhere in the world," said Ken Kelling, spokesman for the English Tourism Council.
"Windsor Castle and Stonehenge are considered among the wonders of Britain, and I believe we can compete on a world tourism stage. If Britons are asked about dream destinations around the world, perhaps they do not consider what's on their own doorstep."
New Zealand's South Island, used for location shots in the "Lord of the Rings" films, was fourth on the list, with the South African city of Cape Town fifth. India's Golden Temple at Amritsar was in sixth place, followed by the American gambling town of Las Vegas, Sydney in Australia, New York City and India's Taj Mahal.
Ayers Rock in Australia, Niagara Falls, the Pyramids of Egypt and the Great Wall of China were also in the top 20.
Other top tourist spots which made the top 50 included Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, the Italian capital Rome and the Caribbean island of Barbados.
