December 1, 1977: Five hundred fifty Youngstown public school students are notified that if they do not get required immunization shots by Dec. 7 they will be barred from attending class.
Youngstown City Council, with some debate and reservations, agrees to pay $3,500 to join the Steel Communities Coalition, a group formed to press for a national steel policy.
Paula Nolfie of Marmion Ave. is given the keys to a new 1978 Oldsmobile Starfire, the first off the line at the General Motors Assembly Plant at Lordstown. She won the car in a contest conducted by the Youngstown district's four Oldsmobile dealers.
December 1, 1962: A meeting of all police chiefs in Mahoning and Trumbull counties to exchange information on crime conditions leading to the Cavallaro bombing is being arranged by Mahoning County Sheriff Ray T. Davis.
Four new courses are being added for the winter quarter at Kent State University's Salem academic center. There were 154 students enrolled in the fall quarter.
The Mahoning Valley Industrial Council promises rigid enforcement of antigambling rules by its member industries in a move to strike at organized gambling, one of the basic reasons for gangland bombings in the Youngstown district.
December 1, 1952: A fire in a four-family apartment building at 1007 W. Rayen Ave. drives 20 persons out into the cold and causes $4,200 in losses. The blaze was caused by an oil stove in the apartment of Mrs. Mary Lewis.
Youngstown Police Chief Edward J. Allen recommends against issuing a soft drink license for J. Joseph "Fats" Aiello because he "wants to eliminate hoodlum hangouts, not create them."
Danish doctors, using surgery and hormone treatments change the sex of George Jorgensen Jr., son of a Bronx carpenter, to Christine Jorgensen, a pretty 26-year-old woman with long yellow hair and large gray-blue eyes.
December 1, 1927: The Federal Radio Commission plans to eliminate as many as 300 of the 694 radio stations broadcasting in the United States, possibly including both of Youngstown's stations, WKBN and WMBW, unless they can prove that they meet a "public necessity." The FRC says 700 stations can't be accommodated on the available 89 wave lengths.
Stephen Peroga, 46, of Sharon is killed instantly when the handcar he was riding is struck by a fast passenger train. Four other Erie section hands escaped death when they jumped from the car just in the nick of time.
