Osteoporosis study
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, in collaboration with Jameson Hospital in New Castle, is recruiting area women with osteoporosis to participate in a research study to test an experimental medication requiring only one dosage per year. University of Pittsburgh is one of 200 sites around the world recruiting women to test the efficacy of zoledronic acid, an intravenous bisphosphonate, in reducing the risk of osteoporotic fractures.
The study, called Horizon, will involve 7,000 women in determining whether the drug reduces the number of hip fractures. To be eligible for Horizon, participants must be women between the ages of 65 and 89; not taking Fosamax or Actonel; and willing to take an experimental medication. Participants are permitted to take estrogen, Miacalcin or Evista during the study. Potential study participants will receive their initial bone density tests at Jameson Hospital to determine eligibility.
Women selected for the study will receive free physical exams, bone density tests, spinal X-rays and calcium and vitamin D supplements. Half of the participants will receive the experimental medication, and half will receive a placebo (inactive medication). Transportation to and from the University's Oakland clinic will be provided at no cost if needed. For more information, call toll free (800) 872-3653.
