DIVISION V Pleasant stages 3-TD uprising, spills Smithville



Marion Pleasant scored three TDs in a short span of the final quarter for a 33-18 win and a state title.
CANTON (AP) -- Marion Pleasant scored three touchdowns -- two on defense -- in a 1:12 span of the fourth quarter to win the Division V state title Saturday, 33-18 over Smithville.
The other touchdown followed an interception as the Spartans (15-0) overcame an 18-13 deficit, to clinch an undefeated season and their first state title since 1996.
The miscues cost the Smithies (14-1) at the worst time, just 9:56 from their first state title.
Jason Edler turned the game around for Marion Pleasant, intercepting an Andy Foster pass with about eight minutes to play and returning the pick 42 yards to Smithville's 13-yard line.
On the next play, Darren Farmer scored his second touchdown on a 13-yard run to give the Spartans a 19-18 lead with 7:53 remaining.
Matt Brown then returned a Foster interception 41 yards for a touchdown with 7:00 to play, and Jake Bennett scored on a 20-yard return with 6:41 remaining after Smithville's Kris Kendle fumbled.
Turnovers
Smithville passers threw four interceptions and the team lost one of its five fumbles.
Farmer ran for 48 yards and scored touchdowns on two of his four carries for Marion Pleasant. In addition to the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, Farmer had a 3-yard TD run in the third.
Drew Beichler led Smithville with four catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns, including a 56-yard scoring pass from Foster that put the Smithies ahead 18-13 with 9:56 remaining.
Beichler also caught a 15-yard TD pass from Foster and set up Smithville's first score in the second quarter by making a leaping catch over a defender.

Beichler pulled down the pass over Nick DeSantis against the sideline, but he fumbled the ball at the Marion Pleasant 20 while stumbling toward the end zone. Kendle scooped up the loose ball at the 5-yard line and scored a touchdown to pull the Smithies within 7-6.
Beichler's first TD catch, which followed a Caleb Middleton interception, gave the Smithies a 12-7 lead at the half.
The Spartans drove from their 28-yard line to the Smithies' 11 in the closing moments of the first half, but the drive ended at the 2 when Eric Vangeloff was marked just short of a first down on a fourth down pass.
