Sooners blank Tulsa
TULSA, Okla. -- Oklahoma's rise to No. 1 could end up being short-lived.
The Sooners, who moved into a tie with Miami this week in The Associated Press Top 25 poll, were inconsistent on offense throughout the game in beating Tulsa 37-0 Friday night.
Senior tailback Quentin Griffin ran for a career-high 237 yards on just 17 carries, and freshman Kejuan Jones had 70 yards and two short touchdown runs. But Jason White threw two interceptions, including one in the end zone, and several dropped balls and other mistakes made for a sloppy performance.
Marlin is pole-sitter
DARLINGTON, S.C. -- As a steady stream of rain washed out qualifying Friday for the Southern 500, Sterling Marlin passed the time with practical jokes while waiting for NASCAR to award him the pole.
Marlin, the Winston Cup points leader, knew he was guaranteed the top spot for Sunday's race at Darlington Raceway because the 43-car field was set by points.
Mark Martin, who trails Marlin by 95 points in the standings, starts second. Jeff Gordon, a four-time Southern 500 winner, will start third and will be followed by Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson.
