TRUMBULL COUNTY Warren JFK, Hubbard, Brookfield triumph



Maurice Gore scored twice in JFK's victory.
CHAMPION -- Maurice Gore rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns Friday to lead Warren JFK to a 28-7 victory over Champion.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard early when Shane Golden returned a punt 62 yards for the first touchdown, but the Golden Flashes (1-1) came right back when Brian Smith tossed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Bernhard to tie the score.
The Eagles took the lead for keeps when Gore scored from 10 yards out and then added a 25-yard touchdown run in the third period. The final JFK score came on a 9-yard pass from John DiFiore to Nick Massary.
The Eagles (1-1 because of a forfeit for ineligible players) finished with 184 rushing yards and DiFiore was 13 of 22 for 87 yards and a touchdown pass.
Smith was 9-of-23 for 160 yards to lead the Flashes, who added 80 yards on the ground.
Hubbard 47, Cleveland East 20: HUBBARD -- Tailback Shaun Lane scored twice on the ground and finished with 100 yards rushing as Hubbard used 12 different ballcarriers in its second win.
Lane, a junior, picked up his yardage on just eight carries for the Eagles, who amassed 305 of their 371 yards on the ground.
Senior quarterback Gabe McKee passed for two touchdowns and ran 1 yard for another as Hubbard has outscored its opposition this season, 54-20.
Junior fullback Chris Buccilli and junior Claude Fisher scored for the winners. Buccilli picked up 64 yards on 10 carries, while McKee added 26 yards and Fisher 29 yards.
Reserve running back Jeramey May, a senior, and Jacoby Morris, a junior wide receiver, also scored for Hubbard.
Hubbard's longest run from scrimmage was Lane's 30-yard TD to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead before Stefan Hayek made the first of his five PATs.
Cleveland East (0-2) did all of its scoring in the fourth quarter and the Blue Bombers finished with 212 yards (176 rushing, 36 passing).
Brookfield 30, Hickory 24: HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Leading 21-0, Brookfield staved off a furious Hickory rally to win its second straight game.
The Hornets (0-1) threatened to take the lead late in the game but stalled on Brookfield's 23-yard line with 12 seconds remaining.
Lou Scudere carried 27 times for 215 yards and a touchdown, and Chris Scharba added 55 yards on 10 carries and another score for the Warriors.
Levio Baldarelli rushed for 63 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown for Hickory.
Lisbon 43, LaBrae 14: LEAVITTSBURG -- Jay Yorty rushed for 63 yards on 12 carries and he was 5-of-8 passing for 93 yards for the Blue Devils (1-1).
Yorty connected on TD passes of 25 and 23 yards to Kevin West and Chris Friend, respectively.
The Blue Devils' Frank Gallo scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards.
Brett Briscoe of LaBrae rushed 19 times for 105 yards and he caught a 47-yard TD pass from Dan Hartman.
Liberty 27, Garfield 17: GARRETTSVILLE -- Mike Marvin gained 108 yards on 14 carries, which included touchdown runs of 14, 11 and 11 yards for the Leopards.
