NILES -- The family of Leonard Holloway, former president of the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial board of trustees, was to be honored this morning for his 25-year commitment to the community.
The memorial board of trustees was to give a plaque to Holloway's wife, Jane, his son Leonard Jr., and daughter Joyce at the memorial downtown.
Holloway was president of the board from 1977 until his death in April at 86.
"He was involved in just about every club from Kiwanis to the Red Cross," said Glenn Griffiths, memorial board trustee for six years. "It was all volunteer work."
Loved the city
Holloway was in love with Niles, Griffiths said. "He would do just about anything for anybody."
Besides his extensive community involvement, Holloway was owner and operator of Holloway and Son Funeral Home.
He was a past president of the Mahoning-Trumbull-Columbiana Funeral Directors Association.
The McKinley Memorial marks the birthplace of President William McKinley, who was born in Niles in 1843.
Joseph Butler, McKinley's friend, raised the money to build the memorial and set up a trust fund in 1917 -- 16 years after McKinley's death.
The board of trustees is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the historical site.
