NILES Officials talk about Robbins Ave. project

Residents with special needs can be accommodated.

NILES -- Motorists have been patient so far with construction along Robbins Avenue, but that doesn't mean they don't have questions.
Councilman Tom Scarnecchia said he's fielded several calls about the work, which started in April and is expected to be complete by November.
The project is a total renovation of Robbins Avenue, including the installation of storm sewers on the upper portion of the street. Previously, only the lower section of the road had the storm sewers.
Once complete, the street will have two lanes for travel as well as a center turn lane, said Mayor Ralph A. Infante. There will also be new asphalt installed, sidewalks and curbs on both sides of the street and new driveway approaches.
Federal highway funds and money from the city are paying for the project, Infante said; $1.5 million was allotted for the project, but bids came in around $1.2 million. The city's share of the costs is about $570,000, he said.
Maintaining access
During construction, some blocks are closed off to traffic while crews dig up the roadway. Although it restricts homeowners' access to their driveways, those with special concerns, such as disabled residents, can be accommodated, Infante said.
