GIRLS SOCCER Williams' goal lifts Canfield



The Cardinals posted a 1-0 win over Boardman for a 2-0 record.
CANFIELD -- Senior co-captain Kelly Williams scored the only goal of the game with 20 minutes remaining in the second half on an assist by Grazia Sorice, as Canfield High blanked Boardman 1-0 Wednesday in a girls soccer game.
Canfield had 22 shots on goal, to 11 for the Spartans.
Goalkeeper Noelle Zalac had nine saves for the Cardinals (2-0). Boardman goalie Lauren Callahan had 16 saves. "I thought this was a well played game by both teams that could have gone either way," said Canfield coach Jon Ulicney.
"I felt that Boardman had one of the fastest squads I've seen so far this season. Our girls actually had a better second half and they were more relaxed and we played more of a controlled game."
Mooney 4, Wilmington 0: Freshman Marisa Simon scored two goals and had an assist for the Cardinals, while senior Katie Vinopal and freshman Kelli Willis added one goal and one assist each. Freshman Kelly Burke had 1 assist.
Senior goalkeeper Adrianne Detesko had one save.
Mooney 7, Maplewood 0: Willis scored three goals, while freshman Gabrielle Fagan added two. Vinopal had one goal and an assist, while Gina Fabian scored once. Simon had two assists, while Amy Edwards and Jamie Matteo had one each. Goalkeepers Adrianne Detesko and Natalie Humphreys had one save each.
Boys: YOUNGSTOWN -- Barry Kimpel and Exequiel Martinez-Taylor scored goals, as Columbiana defeated Chaney 2-0 at Kochis Field.
Eric Birnesser had an assist for the Clippers (3-0), whose goalie, David Cramer, had 19 saves.
Brian Glick had 16 stops, Nick Sposato 15 and Eric Bable 12 to lead Columbiana's defense.
Chaney (1-1) goalie Sabrina Crincic had five saves.
Howland 1, Fitch 0; Howland 1, GlenOak 1: Senior Sam Mann scored the lone goal in the Tigers' opener against Fitch. Then sophomore Mike Maiorano had Howland's lone tally in the tie against GlenOak.
Lakeview 5, Badger 0: KINSMAN -- Shawn Upshir had two goals while Kyle Licht, Phil Butch and Jeremy Mink added one goal apiece for Lakeview, which had a 1-0 lead at halftime. Butch and Licht also had assists for the Bulldogs (1-0), whose goalie, Alex Koltsov, had eight saves.
For Badger (0-2), senior goalie Josh Dagres had six saves while sophomore keeper Josh Gilliland had three saves.
