Youngstown board OKs a bid for school demolition
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Board of Education has awarded a $138,377 contract to William Pizzuto & amp; Co. of Youngstown for asbestos removal and demolition of Harding Elementary School on the North Side. The company was the lowest of nine bidders.
The work will include removal and transportation of the school's boiler to the district's bus garage for storage as a spare in case it is needed in another school. The demolition is expected to be completed by the end of November, said Brad Adams, senior project manager with Heery Inc., the district's construction management firm.
Harding closed in June, and its pupils have been relocated to Jefferson School until the new Harding Elementary can be built on the same site.
Also Tuesday, the board authorized bidding for construction of parking lots on the east and north sides of Chaney High School and underground utilities and storm water drainage to accompany them. The lots must be built so the addition to the high school can be built on a parking lot beginning next year, Adams explained.
Both projects are part of the district's $182.5 million, six-year construction and renovation project.
