SOCCER PREVIEW Boardman, Canfield among Valley's best

Fitch and Boardman will battle for the boys Steel Valley title.

Last year in the girl's Division I sectional soccer tournament, Boardman and Canfield played on even terms for much of the match until Spartan striker Janeen Masternick broke an ankle.
Canfield won and advanced to the regional. This year, those same two teams, along with Fitch, Howland and Poland, should battle it out for domination of the division.
Masternick, who has scored 100 career goals, returns along with senior Maggie Mills to give second-year coach Fawzi Mujahed a potent attack.
Four seniors -- Grazia Sorice, Kelly Williams, Kristen Rutkousky and Noelle Zalac -- bolster Canfield.
Fitch will be in the mix along with Howland which features all-league goalie Darcy Quinlan.
Division II
Hubbard went to the regional tournament last season and coach Dennis Smith returns enough veterans to repeat. The Eagles have senior forward Brittany McKee, the reigning Vindicator Player of the Year, along with senior Anna DeJulio, a three-sport standout.
Katie Barnes returns at Lakeview while Ursuline will call on junior Katie Frank, a talent in goal.
Cardinal Mooney figures to start as many as five freshman while Liberty's top player will be a junior, Brittny Humphrey.
Salem has a pair of talented juniors, Lizzie Jesko and Alyson Cotter, while Niles welcomes back Ali King.
Boys
Two of the area's best Division I teams, Boardman and Fitch, will battle for the last SVC championship.
Fitch, coached by Rigo Castillo who won his 100th game last year, will be led by Sam Camens, a talented senior midfielder. Boardman will counter with Ryan Ingram, a senior defender.
In Division II, Cardinal Mooney, the reigning SVC champ, played in its first regional last fall, and returns 14 of its top 15 players, including two Vindicator All-Stars, sophomore Kiki Willis and senior Alex Simon.
Canfield, coached by second-year mentor Phil Simione, will go as far as exciting junior Matt Pietro can take it.
Hubbard offers the 1-2 punch of Justin Daly and Chris Styn and Poland will be paced by midfielder J.R. Flis.
