WARREN Horse show to raise funds for Animal Welfare League

The group depends on donations and fund-raisers.
WARREN -- More than 300 participants are expected at the Western Reserve Classic Horse Show next month to benefit the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County.
The 18th annual show runs Sept. 13-15 at Perkins Park.
The show features a variety of horse breeds including Andalusians, Morgans, Saddlebreds, Western breeds and Hackney ponies. Shows will be performed in the main ring and the hunt ring during the three-day event.
"We had 350 participants last year, and we're hoping for more this year," said Barbara Clifford, one of the show's organizers. "A lot depends on the weather."
Demonstration
Terry and Janet Tenney of Champion will present an exhibition of classical baroque dressage at the show. Janet Tenney will ride an Azteca stallion. The saddle and clothing will be a Spanish riding school style.
Terry Tenney will ride an Andalusian stallion and dress in the style of a working cowboy of Spain.
Other attractions include a silent auction, pony rides and food.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the gate for the Animal Welfare League. The league receives no funding other than donations and fund-raisers.
Sept. 13 will be the judging for the halter class, when the horses are judged based on their configuration, or whether they bear the characteristics of their particular breed.
The hunter class is judged on the style with which the animals jump over fences.
Clifford compared jumping vs. hunter class to speed skating vs. figure skating: Style counts as well as the jump.
Most participants return from year to year. Most come from Ohio and Pennsylvania, but the show has drawn people from as far away as Michigan, New York and Canada.
"It's a fun way for a family to come and spend the day together," Clifford said.
