SUSPENDED GAMES Chaney holds on to beat Falcons

After storms washed out the finish of the game Friday, the Cowboys came back Saturday to win 19-13.
AUSTINTOWN -- The Chaney High football team held on to beat Austintown Fitch 19-13 in a game that was suspended Friday night and completed Saturday.
Lightning forced the suspension with 8 minutes, 9 seconds remaining in the game Friday and Chaney leading 19-7 at Falcon Stadium.
When play resumed Saturday, Fitch senior Davanzo Tate closed the gap with a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:31 remaining. But the Falcons, who scored their points in the fourth quarter, got no closer.
Chaney was led by senior running back Ed McElroy with 144 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns and junior quarterback Justin Hood with 120 yards on nine attempts and one touchdown.
For Fitch, Tate totaled 84 yards on 10 carries and the touchdown, while senior quarterback Jason Aikens had 63 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown.
Chaney won despite its nine penalties for 102 yards. Fitch had more first downs, 12-9.
East Palestine 37, South Range 13: EAST PALESTINE -- Jonathan Powers scored three touchdowns including a 91-yard opening kickoff return to lead East Palestine in a game completed Saturday after Friday's thunderstorm.
Powers gained 56 yards on 19 carries and scored on runs of 2 and 3 yards.
Bulldogs quarterback Smitty Kendrew completed eight of 16 passes for 115 yards, including a 12-yard scoring toss to Joseph Rettig.
Chris Clark caught five passes for 55 yards. Ralph Lattanzio returned an interception 28 yards and Tyler Mackall booted a 34-yard field goal.
For South Range, Tony Darkadakis rushed for 62 yards on 11 carries and scored a 2-yard touchdown. Brian Novak gained 70 yards on five carries while quarterback Ryan Maxwell picked up 72 yards on 14 carries. He scored a touchdown on a 10-yard run.
Beaver Local 34, Lisbon 0: LISBON -- Beaver Local High picked up right where it left off Friday by adding two more touchdowns in shutting out Lisbon.
Jake Robinson, who tallied on a 12-yard run in the first quarter, score on a 7-yard run in the third quarter when the game resumed Saturday.
Jordan Williams rushed for 121 yards on 13 carries and he ended the scoring in the fourth period when he raced 13 yards for a TD.
The Beavers rushed for 386 yards on 53 attempts, with Robinson gaining 86 on 10 tries.
Lisbon was held to 55 yards on 29 rushes, with Jermaine Lewis gaining 26 on nine attempts.
United 20, Ashtabula Edgewood 7: HANOVERTON -- Mitch Phillis scored on a 1-yard run then connected with Corey Manfull for an 85-yard touchdown pass for the Golden Eagles.
Nick Johnson scored United's first-quarter touchdown on a 5-yard run. Johnson led the Eagles in rushing with 77 yards on 20 carries. Phillis completed 9-of-17 passes for 211 yards.
West Branch 23, Southeast 13: BELOIT -- The West Branch defense, although it allowed a touchdown by Southeast in the third quarter, allowed only 26 rushing yards in winning a delayed 23-13 victory over Pirates Saturday at Heacock Stadium.
The Warriors had built a 23-7 lead in the contest that was postponed after the first half Friday because of inclement weather.
Seven different Warriors were involved in the scoring. Corey Wonner and Josh Davis each scored on 4-yard runs, Ryan Casteel on a 40-yard punt return.
Salem 52, Marlington 27: SALEM -- The Salem High football team snapped a nine-game losing streak as it upended Marlington.
The Quakers were ahead 31-14 when the game was halted by the officials because of lightning.
Sophomore running back Grant Sevek gained 128 yards on 25 rushes, including a 35-yard TD run.
Lance Buckley, a junior, carried the ball only three times for 108 yards, which included TD runs of 71 and 33 yards.
The Quakers amassed 533 total yards, as Landon Heath connected on 16 of 20 passes for 289 yards and two TDs. Garrett Sevek caught eight of those passes for 148 yards. He also scored on a 3-yard run.
East Liverpool 21, Mooney 6: EAST LIVERPOOL -- The Cardinals produced a balanced attack (89 yards rushing, 93 passing) but could only crack the goal line once in a game postponed over night due to lightning.
The Potters, who ran 30 times for all 196 of their offensive yards, jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a 63-yard dash by Justin Campbell.
Ron Stoops, who was 10-for-23 passing for 93 yards, found Tom Miller for a 22-yard scoring aerial to make it 7-6.
The Potters picked up a Stoops fumble and returned it 5 yards for a score and a 14-6 lead at the break.
When the game resumed, David Delaney did all the scoring, running for a 23-yard TD with 8 minutes, 4 seconds to play.
Canton Timken 13, Cloverleaf 9: CANTON -- Jesse James scored on a 2-yard run with 6 minutes eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter as Canton Timken rallied in the second half.
