Several state and local agencies are working to promote seat-belt use over the Labor Day weekend as part of their "What's Holding You Back?" campaign, which is in its second year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says raising seat-belt use rates by 5 percent would save 40 lives per year. The facts:
Last year, two-thirds of all Ohioans who died on roadways in crashes were unbuckled.
One person dies in a fatal accident every 13 minutes, 114 people die every day, and 40,000 die every year.
Crashes where safety belts were not worn cost Ohioans, on average, $5,000 more per crash than those in which belts were worn.
