New symphony director named
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Michael Gelfand of Youngstown State University Dana School of Music is the new musical director and conductor of Greenville Symphony Orchestra. His first performance as conductor will be Oct. 5, when the symphony performs in Passavant Center at Thiel College.
Gelfand was one of three finalists to replace Dr. Paul Chenevey, who retired after 16 years with the symphony.
Gelfand, who plays cello, has performed with Cleveland Orchestra, Boston Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Nice Philharmonic and Paris Chamber Orchestra. He's been teaching at Dana since 1975. He is also music director and conductor of Ashtabula Area Orchestra and principal cellist with Youngstown Symphony and Warren Philharmonic orchestras.
Film takes 3 prizes
"Meddle and Steal," a short film that was written, produced and directed by Boardman native Leone Marucci, received three prizes last weekend at New York International Independent Film & amp; Video Festival. "Meddle & amp; Steal," a story of two men who are simultaneously trying to rob the same bank, was named best action film. Marucci received best screenplay honors and Tracy Pearce was chosen as best actor.
Marucci, who graduated in 1991 from Boardman High School, operates a film production company, Steelyard Pictures, in Los Angeles.
Event toasts bikers
REYNOLDS, Pa. -- Rick Derringer, The Hern Brothers Band and The River Saints will provide entertainment at "Pride Ride, A Celebration of the American Biker" at 4 p.m. Sept. 7 at Reynolds Drive-In, Pa. Route 18. The day's events will include a poker run, raffles, food vendors and music. The movie "Easy Rider," starring Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson, will be shown that evening. Classic car event set
CORTLAND -- A classic car "Cruisin' by the Lake" event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 15 at the boat launch at Mosquito Lake State Park, Route 88, west of Route 46.
Registration fee is $2. Dash plaques will be presented the first 100 cars registered between noon and 2 p.m. Trophies will be awarded the top 10 entries.
