Fire damages duplex
YOUNGSTOWN -- Damage was estimated at $10,000 in a Saturday morning fire in a duplex at 506 W. Glenaven Ave., whose cause is listed as accidental but undetermined, according to Battalion Chief Timothy McGarry. Four people were home at the time of the fire, which was reported at 9:09 a.m., and all got themselves out safely, he said.
Meeting on hiring
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Springfield Township trustees will have a special, closed-door meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at township hall to discuss hiring a fire chief and a substitute secretary.
Contract discussion
CANFIELD -- The school board will have a special meeting at 6 p.m. Monday in the board offices to discuss employment contracts.

Man attacked
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Broadway Street man told police he was slashed with a knife Saturday morning outside a drive-through on Belmont Avenue. Michael Moore, 30, was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for cuts to his throat and forearm. Moore said he was riding his bike away from the store at about 1:10 a.m. when a man got out of a car on Belmont Avenue, approached him and told him to hand over his groceries. When Moore replied that he didn't have much, the man pulled out a knife and slashed him. The man then got back into the car and drove north.
Boy treated in shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 13-year-old Stewart Avenue boy was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a McCartney Road convenience store Friday. A store security officer told police she heard a loud noise in the store at 6:11 p.m. She found the boy lying on the floor bleeding from his leg and yelling that he had been shot. The boy took a gun out of his pocket and gave it to his mother's boyfriend, who was standing nearby, police reports show.
