Player with the 49ers faces charges he altered prescription

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A professional football player faces charges of forgery and criminal attempt after being accused of trying to pass an improper prescription, police said.
An arrest warrant was issued this week for Jeff McCurley, 23, of Smalls Ferry Road, Enon Valley. McCurley, a former University of Pittsburgh football standout, is a center for the San Francisco 49ers.
Matthew Mangino, Lawrence County district attorney, said arrangements are being made through McCurley's attorney, George Diulus of Pittsburgh, to have him return to Lawrence County for arraignment.
McCurley is now at 49ers training camp in Stockton, Calif.
An affidavit filed to support the charges says McCurley was being treated by an area doctor and was given a prescription for Flonase, Allegra and Celebrex on July 2.
McCurley is accused of trying to get an altered prescription filled at the Village Pharmacy in North Beaver Township on July 22, court records said. The original prescription had been altered when the word Celebrex was erased and Vicodin was inserted, said Pennsylvania State Police.
McCurley will be arraigned by District Justice J.V. Lamb. A preliminary hearing has not been set.
The Mohawk High School graduate was signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in April 2001. He was placed on injured reserve during his first season with the 49ers.
