Howland rolls past Campbell

Maurice Smith and Tony Davis each scored three times to lead the Tigers to a 41-23 win.

CAMPBELL --Howland rolled up 378 total offensive yards, all on the ground, in defeating Campbell Memorial 41-23 Friday at John Knapick Field.
Maurice Smith scored the first two times he touched the ball.
Smith and Tony Davis each scored three touchdowns for the Tigers.
"Maurice Smith is the most unknown premier back in the area," Howland coach Dick Angle said. "We are a young team defensively so we wanted to keep the ball away from the Red Devils tonight. This was a good test for us. We are just glad to escape with a win tonight."
Scored early and often
The Red Devils won the coin toss to start the game, almost regretting that they deferred to the second half of play.
On the first play from scrimmage, Smith raced 74 yards to the end zone to give Howland a 6-0 lead 17 seconds into the game.
Howland held the Red Devils on their first offensive series of the season. When the Tigers got the ball back, Smith made Campbell pay once again as he scored from 57 yards out. Howland built a 14-0 lead 1 minute, 46 seconds into the season.
"They had some big plays tonight," Campbell coach John Ryan said. "We had our chances, but we must now prepare for Struthers next week.
"The Wildcats are a totally different team than Howland so we must prepare ourselves if we expect to have a chance," Ryan said. "Playing your arch-rival is enough motivation. We'll go hard as we look to week two of the season."
The Red Devils knotted the score after the first period when quarterback Rick Quinn found running back Tim Davis on scoring strikes of 3 and 47 yards.
When Smith added his third rushing touchdown on the night, this time from 9 yards out, the Tigers took a 21-14 lead midway through the second quarter.
A George Malactaris 20-yard field goal with 1:57 remaining cut the Tiger lead to 21-17, but Davis scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns with just 55 seconds remaining before intermission as Howland took a 28-17 lead.
"Tony Davis and James Justice are an excellent one-two combination out of the backfield," Angle said. "Add Smith to the mix and we are obviously pleased with our running attack.
"We are a long way from being a good team, but I feel we are on track just a game into the season."
Red Devils come back
Campbell cut the Tiger lead to 28-23 when senior Joe Jackson raced into the end zone with a 37-yard fumble recovery.
Davis and the Tigers, however, proved to be too much in the fourth quarter as he scored his final two touchdowns from 30 and 19 yards to secure their victory.
The Tigers had 378 yards of total offense, all on the ground, as they racked up 22 first downs to the Red Devils' 10. Smith had 247 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns, while Davis had 98 yards on just eight totes resulting in his three scores.
In addition to two touchdown receptions for Davis, he led Campbell with 42 yards on the ground on seven carries. Quinn, a junior, completed nine of 23 aerials for 139 yards and two touchdowns as the Red Devils rolled up 238 yards of total offense.
