Firing advisory stands
WARREN -- Trumbull County Sheriff Thomas Altiere's recommendation to fire deputy Brian Kaintz will stand.
Ernie Cook, chief of operations at the county jail, said Kaintz has indicated he'll appeal that decision.
Kaintz, who is on paid administrative leave, will now have an opportunity to have a hearing with the sheriff sometime next week, Cook said.
Altiere recommended that Kaintz be fired after reviewing an internal investigation into Kaintz's actions during a June 26 chase in which he fired 16 shots. The sheriff said Kaintz violated department policy on use of deadly force.
Department administrators agreed with the recommendation in a predisciplinary meeting Friday.
Recycling bin moves
HOWLAND -- A recycling drop-off container has been moved from the Howland High School football complex on Shaffer Road to behind the fire station on Niles-Cortland Road. Glass, plastics, cans and newspaper can be deposited in the container during daylight hours.
Bike trail discussion
WARREN -- Residents will be able to air concerns about a proposed bike trail at a meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers.
The city has been awarded a $56,000 state grant for the proposed bikeway but hasn't accepted it yet.
Some residents and council members oppose the idea, citing safety concerns.
Jail passes inspection
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Jail is in compliance with Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction standards. State officials inspected the jail Tuesday, assessing reception, housing conditions, health-care plan and food service.
A letter to Sheriff Thomas Altiere from the state jail inspector said the inspection doesn't reflect a comprehensive evaluation of the overall jail operation.
The inspection consisted of a physical tour of the facility, a brief interview with the jail's administrator and receipt of materials requested by state inspectors.
Fatal traffic crash
FRANKLIN, Pa. -- A Hermitage man was killed Thursday when his car veered off U.S. Route 62 in French Creek Township, Venango County, leaving two companions seriously hurt.
Pennsylvania State Police said a car driven by Torrey Keeley, 19, hit a utility pole and rolled onto its roof shortly after 8 a.m.
Neither he nor passengers Nicole Zreliak, 19, of Clark, and Bethany Phillips, 24, of Sharpsville, was wearing a seat belt, police said. Zreliak and Philips were in critical condition Friday night in a Pittsburgh hospital.
County judges' suit
LISBON -- The Ohio Supreme Court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Columbiana County Common Pleas Court judges against county commissioners.
The Supreme Court determined there was a procedural error in filing the case, Commissioner Sean Logan said Friday.
The judges may refile the lawsuit seeking nearly $500,000 in additional funding to run the court and related offices.
Resisting-arrest plea
BOARDMAN -- LaShonda D. Shavers, 24, East Warren Avenue, Youngstown, has pleaded innocent in Boardman Area Court to charges of resisting arrest. No plea was accepted on felony charges of robbery and aggravated assault.
Police reports say Shavers hit and bit three Giant Eagle employees as she tried to leave the store with several items in her purse. The employees were treated at a local hospital. Shavers is being held on $23,000 bond.
Jailed in assault
POLAND -- A dispute over a dog has landed one township man in jail.
Brad Allen Ruozzo is charged with misdemeanor assault and criminal damaging. Police reports say the 18-year-old West Water Street man grabbed the neck of his girlfriend's mother and pushed her Thursday morning at the woman's James Street home.
Reports say the altercation started when the woman tried to answer a phone call to sell a dog. Ruozzo, reports say, asserts the dog is his and the woman has no right to sell it.
Writers group to meet
BOARDMAN -- The writers group Focus on Fiction will meet at 4 p.m. Sunday at Barnes and Noble. The purpose of the group is support of writers, published and nonpublished, of all genres. Participants may bring original work to share with the group.
