Second man faces drug charges after police search apartment

AUSTINTOWN -- A Niles man wanted on several warrants for drug crimes turned himself in Thursday to township police.
Robert Jewell, 19, of Salt Springs Road, is charged with drug abuse marijuana and cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also is charged with permitting drug abuse. He surrendered around 9:30 a.m. at the police station.
Jewell later pleaded innocent in Mahoning County Court in Austintown to the charges of drug abuse marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and permitting drug abuse and posted $4,000 bond. No plea was required for the drug abuse cocaine charge, a felony.
His next hearing is set for Sept. 23.
Police said they searched a North Kimberly Avenue apartment on July 9 that Jewell shared with Rush Fairbanks, 19, and found a shotgun, two plastic bags containing suspected marijuana, a plastic bag containing suspected cocaine, a nitrous oxide container, a scale, and a pipe that contained suspected marijuana residue. The search was in response to a complaint of drug activity at the apartment.
Police also said they found a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana when they searched Jewell.
Fairbanks pleaded innocent Aug. 12 in county court to charges of drug abuse marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and permitting drug abuse and entered no plea to the drug abuse cocaine charge. He posted $5,000 bond and was set for hearing Sept. 30.
