Mooney tickets
YOUNGSTOWN -- Cardinal Mooney High School now has tickets on sale for Friday's football game at East Liverpool.
Tickets are available at the school office from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and are priced at $4 for adults and $3 for students. Adults will pay $5 at the gate.
SOI/Summit wins
MENTOR -- The SOI/Summit under-12 boys soccer team won a three-round shootout to capture the Mentor 7-vs.-7 tournament.
On the winning team were Trevor Ragan of Boardman, Joe Merlo (Niles), John Pouliot (Wellsville) and Cody Culp (East Liverpool).
Grove City swimteam earns honors
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team has been honored by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for its academic work in the spring semester.
The Lady Wolverines posted a 3.39 grade-point average. Peggy Whitbeck qualified for the NCAA Championships and had at least a 3.5 GPA to be named an Academic All-American.
Maruschak to speak
WARREN -- Former Ohio State University recruiter Bob Maruschak will be the speaker at the Trumbull County All Athletics Sports Club meeting at the Ground Round Restaurant on Elm Road.
The meeting will be Aug. 26 with a cash bar beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the talk at 6:30.

Group againstMassillon's tiger
MASSILLON -- An animal rights group has criticized the use of a tiger cub mascot at Massillon Washington High School's football games.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wrote Superintendent Al Hennon on Monday asking that the district stop using tiger cubs from a local farm for display at games.
Hennon rejected the idea and said the mascot is treated well. "He is held in high esteem around here," he said.
This year's mascot, a 12-week-old female tiger cub, was picked up Monday from Stump Hill Farm. During her stay, "Obie" will bunk at the homes of three caretakers, all team boosters.
While PETA believes public appearances are stressful for the tiger, the organization does not object to bulldog mascots at Massillon's archrival, Canton McKinley, said Amy Rhodes, the Norfolk, Va.-based group's animals in entertainment specialist.
She said the bulldog probably enjoys the attention at McKinley and said the stress on an exotic animal is different.
Massillon Washington has one of the most respected football programs in the state. Paul Brown coached the Tigers before leading Ohio State and the Cleveland Browns. Because of the northeast Ohio city's love for the sport, a baby boy born in Massillon gets a football placed in his bassinet.
Big Ten addspole vault rules
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Big Ten conference has established new safety regulations for pole vaulting, Penn State officials said Tuesday.
The changes were partly in response to a Penn State student's death while pole vaulting at the University of Minnesota. Kevin Dare died in February when he fell while competing in the conference's indoor track and field championships.
On July 25, the Big Ten conference adopted rule changes proposed by the NCAA's Track and Field Committee on June 20. The rules include more padding and ending the practice of "tapping," or assisting the athlete at takeoff. In addition to the changes proposed by the NCAA committee, the Big Ten has decided to implement several other changes, such as on-campus pole vault safety clinics and new markings on the runway and landing pad.

Bloodworth dies
APALACHICOLA, Fla. -- Jimmy Bloodworth, an infielder on the 1950 Philadelphia Phillies "Whiz Kids," died last weekend. He was 85.
Bloodworth, a Tallahassee native who spent 11 years in the major leagues, died Saturday, and a funeral was held Tuesday.
He began his career with the Washington Senators and made it to the major leagues briefly in 1937, when he was 19. He stayed up for good in 1939, and played with Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Philadelphia.
