School district sued
LISBON -- A Wellsville man is suing Wellsville School District over an October 1998 shop accident.
Christopher Keyes of 17101 Crews Road seeks more than $25,000 in the suit filed in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court.
The suit contends Keyes was a student in wood shop class when he severed three fingers using a table saw.
The school district was negligent by providing a table saw to students, the lawsuit claims.
A school district spokesman was unavailable Monday to comment.
The suit also names as a defendant Delta International Machinery Corp. of Philadelphia, the manufacturer of the saw.
Thiel freshmen
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College expects 411 freshmen to arrive on campus Wednesday for the opening convocation for the fall term. Total enrollment will reach about 1,300 for the start of classes Monday, and that's up about 110 over last year.
The opening convocation is set for 5:30 p.m. in Passavant Memorial Center, and the rest of the week will be filled with freshman orientation activities, ending with a class trip to New River Gorge in West Virginia, where students can try white-water rafting and other challenges.
South Range upgrades
NORTH LIMA -- Superintendent James Hall told the South Range Board of Education Monday that all summer building improvements are completed and everything is ready for the Sept. 4 opening of school except the addition to the band room. Hall said the addition will be done by Sept. 15.
American Indian show
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township Park Department will end its inaugural season of "Music in the Park" with a special American Indian show beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Woodworth Park.
The Soaring Hawk Village and Cultural Society, dressed in full woodland regalia, will set up a display complete with a tepee. The group will play drums and flutes as well as sing and dance.
Picketing set up
SALEM -- About 35 people representing area unions are conducting informational picketing at the Carriage Hill Foods plant along South Lincoln Avenue.
A spokesman for the pickets said they are protesting the company's hiring a nonunion company to install equipment inside the plant. The picketing began this morning.
