Spartan golftourney is Friday
LIBERTY -- The 2002 Spartan Golf Invitational will be held at Youngstown Country Club Friday with 24 area high school golf teams taking part.
The event, which kicks off the high school golf season, will get underway with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
Bill Orr, Boardman High golf coach and tournament director, says that participants can begin practicing at 6:30 a.m. when the driving range opens.
The top two teams and top three individuals will receive trophies. Teams will consist of six players with the top four scores counting for the overall team championship.
Teams participating include Avon Lakes, Austintown Fitch, Boardman, Brunswick, Canfield, Cardinal Mooney, Champion, Conneaut, Coventry, Gates Mills Hawken, Gilmour Academy, Green, Howland, Hubbard, Jackson, Liberty, Massillon Perry, Poland, Salem, Struthers, Ursuline, Walsh Jesuit, Warren Harding and Warren JFK.
Teri Haefke sixthat PWBA event
FAIRLAWN -- Teri Haefke of Austintown finished sixth and just out of the stepladder finals, at the Akron Women's PWBA Northeast Region Open Friday through Sunday, at AMF Riviera Lanes.
Haefke rolled a 30-game total of 6329 and earned $400. The fifth-place finisher and last qualifier for the stepladder, Cindy Coburn of Williamsville, N.Y., rolled 6387.
Marla Chicase of Poland and Sue Mineo of Austintown also finished in the money. Chicase rolled a 5962, good for 13th place, while Mineo was in 14th with a 5858.
Other local bowlers were Barbara Baker of Youngstown, 20th with 2630; Michaelene Klug of Cortland, 27th with 2528, and Nancy Fairchild of Boardman, 40th with 2389.

O'Neal doesn't show
TAMPA, Fla. -- Shaquille O'Neal failed to show up Sunday at a youth basketball camp and charity game bearing his name because of an illness, the Los Angeles Times reported.
O'Neal was resting at home Sunday after he was hospitalized Thursday with a 103-degree fever, the newspaper reported in today's editions. O'Neal was released Friday and told by doctors to rest and drink fluids, according to his agent, Perry Rogers.

* VAUDREUIL-DORION, Quebec -- Meg Mallon, taking advantage of Catriona Matthew's triple bogey on the 12th hole, shot a 1-over 73 to win the windswept Canadian Women's Open.
It marked the 10th time Mallon has come from behind in the final round to win. She finished at 4-under 284 in her 14th career victory.
* HELSINGBORG, Sweden -- Annika Sorenstam won her eighth title of the season, shooting a 2-under 70 for a four-stroke victory in the Compaq Open.
Sorenstam, playing in Sweden for the first time in two years, had a 17-under 271 to become the first three-time winner of the event.

BUDAPEST, Hungary -- Rubens Barrichello edged teammate Michael Schumacher to win the Hungarian Grand Prix, and their 1-2 finish allowed Ferrari to clinch the Formula One team title with four races left in the season.
Schumacher, already assured of a record-tying fifth driver's championship, just missed becoming the first to win 10 races in a season.
