BROOKFIELD -- A 2,500-square-foot section of the roof at Valley View Auction Center, 7281 Warren-Sharon Road, collapsed about 10 minutes after the center had closed Friday night. There were no injuries.
Brookfield firefighters said the weight of accumulated rainwater caused the roof to collapse at about 8:10 p.m. Eight to 10 steel beams collapsed when the water broke through the roof. The roof's collapse also broke a line for the center's sprinkler system.
A total of about 4 inches of rain water and water from the sprinkler system flooded the 200,000-square-foot center. Firefighters estimated the collapse caused $100,000 in damage.
Mosquito spraying
LIBERTY -- Alexander's Pest Control will spray for mosquitoes two nights between Tuesday and Friday, from dusk to about 2 a.m.
Residents are encouraged to close windows and keep pets and food inside.
Seminar looks at impactof nursing-home cost
WARREN -- Greater Warren Credit Union will have a free seminar discussing the threat to financial security posed by the cost of nursing-home care.
Victoria E. Schafer, an AARP participating attorney, will be the guest speaker.
The seminar will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the second-floor conference room at the credit-union offices, 3991 Mahoning Ave.
Luau at Girard library
GIRARD -- Greater Girard Area Chamber of Commerce and Friends of Girard Free Library are sponsoring a Hawaiian luau mixer from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 27 in the library.

Child-safety seat check
YOUNGSTOWN -- There will be a free check of child-safety seats Thursday at Rural Metro Ambulance, 3121 Market St. The inspection will be offered by reservation only from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The check is sponsored by the Mahoning Valley SAFE KIDS Coalition, Youngstown Buick Pontiac GMC Truck and Rural Metro Ambulance.
