Health officials sendseptic-pump reminders
NORTH LIMA -- Mahoning County Board of Health is mailing septic system pumping reminders to about 961 households in Beaver Township. There is no law that requires homeowners to get their septic tanks pumped, but regular service can potentially save thousands of dollars in repair costs, said Matthew Stefanak, county health commissioner.
Septic tanks should be pumped at varying intervals, depending on household size and water usage. A one-person household with a 1,000-gallon septic tank only needs to have the tank pumped every 12 years.
If four people live in the same household, the septic tank should be pumped every three years, Stefanak said. Homeowners will receive pumping interval recommendations and a list of licensed pumpers with their reminder letter.
Pumpers notify the board of health when they pump a septic tank, and the board uses the information to keep track of when a septic system was last pumped.
