YOUNGSTOWN -- The Vindicator is seeking military veterans of Enduring Freedom, America's war on terrorism, to interview for Sept. 11 one-year anniversary stories.
If you served during Enduring Freedom, overseas or stateside, and are willing to be interviewed, please send information via e-mail to alcorn@vindy.com, or call (330) 747-1471, Ext. 303.
Information should include name and address and how you can be contacted; phone number, fax number and/or e-mail address, and when and where you served.
Event for homeless
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Homeless Coalition's Stand Down 2002, an event through which homeless, near-homeless and low-income residents of Mahoning and Trumbull counties can receive information about health-care programs and social services, will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave.
The coalition urges individuals and agencies to register before Oct. 31, preferably by Oct. 7. Information is available at planning meetings set for 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army on Sept. 18 and Oct. 16; or by calling (330) 507-8956 or (330) 744-1703.
Berlin Dam reopening
BERLIN LAKE -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announces the reopening of the Berlin Dam Day Use Area on Bonner Road on Wednesday. The area will be open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. daily through Sept. 4, and the hours of operation after Sept. 4 will be posted.
Vehicles found in the area in violation of posted hours may be subject to citation and towing at the owner's expense. Additionally, this area will be subject to closure without notice. Additional information may be obtained by calling (330) 547-3781.
Cancer society funds
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning Valley American Cancer Society Swim-Along campaign in June and July raised $16,500.
The money will pay for national and local research and programs such as Camp Friendship, a free camp for children who have cancer or are in remission, and scholarships for those who had cancer and are attending an accredited college or school.
Last year, the event netted $14,000, said Al Stabilito, communications and advocacy director of the Mahoning Valley American Cancer Society.
