Syracuse QBtransfers to YSU
YOUNGSTOWN -- Cecil Howard, a 6-foot-1 quarterback from McKeesport, Pa., has transferred from Syracuse and joined the Youngstown State football team, YSU coach Jon Heacock announced Friday.
Howard, a redshirt freshman, can play immediately and has four years of eligibility remaining.
Howard was rated the No. 4 quarterback and No. 13 recruit in the nation by Tom Lemming and was ranked the No. 8 quarterback by SuperPrep during the 2001 recruiting campaign.
The Rivals.com first-team All-American selection was also rated as the eighth best signee in the Big East by The Sporting News and listed as the 21st best freshman by Athlon.

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Vindicator will publish its annual high school football preview on Thursday. The section will include conference and team previews, player profiles and season schedules.
Boardman standoutscontinue careers
BOARDMAN -- Recent Boardman High graduates Gina Mavrikis and Ashley Kohler will continue their track and field careers at area colleges.
Mavrikis, a two-time All-Ohioan in track and a member of this year's fifth place 4x800 relay team, will run cross country and track at YSU. A four-year letterwinner in track and cross country, Mavrikis earned academic All-Ohio, all-county, All-Suburban League and All-Steel Valley Conference honors for the past two years. She also received the Youngstown Road Runners Club scholarship.
Kohler, a four-year member of Boardman's track and field team in the shot put and discus, will attend Mount Union. Kohler took first in the shot and discus at the Mahoning County meet the past two seasons and was district runner-up in the shot this year. She qualified for the regional meet in both events this year.
Golf Classic results
CANFIELD -- The American Cancer Society Tri-County Golf Classic, played Aug. 12 at Avalon Lakes in Howland, netted $100,000. The top teams were: Flight 1 - William Bresnahan of Kinsman, Don Harrison of Poland, Frank Hierro of Boardman, and Rich McGowan of Canfield; Flight 2 - Phil Beshara of Warren, Don D'Andrea of Hubbard, Michael Duffy of Sharon, and Don Marchionda of Poland; Flight 3 - Dana Balash of Poland, Mike Case of Tallmadge, Tim Kaple of Boardman, and Bob Smallwood of Canfield.

MadDogs finish 17th
BROKEN ARROW, OKLA. -- The Alliance MadDogs (3-2) tied for 17th place in a field of 65 teams at the ASA 18 and Under Gold Fastpitch National Championships.
The Alliance based team was the only Ohio team to qualify for the tournament the past two years, placing 25th in 2001.
The MadDogs lost to Paradise Valley Premier (AZ) 3-0 in their final game.
Team members are Kim Corbets of Solon, Ashley Fairhurst of Tallmadge, Joanna Fergus of Austintown, Kaitlin Guyette of Mantua, Amy Kendell of Fort Wayne, Ind., Nicole Lancaster of Magnolia, Ashley Mayle of Louisville, Katie Maynard of Lancaster, Desiree Miller of Hartville, Amber Murdock of Hiram, Danielle Robine of Mantua, Leanna Van Auken of Mantua, and Brittany Vanderink of Hiram. The team is coached by Bill Hileman, Walt Roth and Kelli Metzger.
Mercer Racewayholds kids night
MERCER, Pa. -- Kids night and the final Max Weiss Law Firm 2002 special family event of the year will be Aug. 24 at Mercer Raceway Park.
Kidz Days 2 will be presented by Armstrong Cable Services.
For the second consecutive year, all children 12 and under will be admitted free and will receive a ticket that will make them eligible to win one of approximately 500 prizes valued at over $5,000.
Tickets prices are $10 for adults, students 13-15 are $5 and a family pass is $23.
OSU basketballwill play Blue Devils
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State basketball team will play Duke on Dec. 3 in Greensboro, N.C., as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
In addition, the Buckeyes will play Louisville at home in the preseason.
