Storms cause outages and flooding

Thunderstorms bringing heavy rain rumbled through Trumbull and Mercer counties Friday evening, knocking down trees and wires and causing power outages and flooding.
A Trumbull County 911 dispatcher said there were many trees and wires down in the Brookfield and Weathersfield township areas, but no roads were closed.
A Hubbard police dispatcher said the city and township were hit with a three-minute power failure at 8:25 p.m. and with another power failure from 8:50 to 9:30 p.m.
Niles firefighters responded to a fire alarm at Eastwood Mall, whose roof leaked, and concluded that the leaking water might have triggered the alarm. There was no fire. Six to 8 inches of water flooded service courts where mall merchants get deliveries by truck, but the water subsided quickly. Parts of Niles were without power.
A Mercer County 911 supervisor reported road and basement flooding, mostly in the Shenango Valley area.
Sharon firefighters shut off electric power to the Keystone Blind Association on Dayton Way, which was flooded by 2 feet of water. The basementless one-story building is in a low-lying area three blocks from the Shenango River. They also roped off an area where a basement wall collapsed because of flooding at a single-family house at 199 E. Budd St. There were no injuries.
