Woman dies of injuries
FARRELL, Pa. -- Lynn Hopson, 44, of Washington Street, who was injured in a one-vehicle accident in West Salem Township last week, has died in a Pittsburgh hospital.
Hopson died Tuesday in UPMC Hospital of trauma to the head, chest and extremities, an Allegheny County Coroner's Office report says. The death was ruled accidental.
Greenville-West Salem Police said Hopson, employed by UPMC Horizon at its Greenville facility, was on her way to work around 6 a.m. Aug. 6 when her car veered off Pa. Route 18, rolled over in a yard and struck a building.
Contract to build road
SHARON, Pa.-- City council awarded Horizon Construction Group of Hermitage a $382,283 contract to build a truck access road on the east side of the downtown business district.
Lawmakers approved the contract Thursday.
The plan is to build the access route by extending Dock Street from Pitt Street one block north to Dayton Way. That should get a lot of industrial trucks off Sharpsville Avenue, city officials said.
A state grant will pay for the work.
Water report given out
LEETONIA -- Village officials have distributed their annual drinking water report to water customers.
The reports were hand-delivered to each customer's location.
Anyone who did not receive a copy may pick one up at the water office at 300 E. Main St. or by calling village hall at (330) 427-8087.

Arson ruled in fire
BERLIN CENTER -- The state fire marshal's office has ruled that a fire Monday that destroyed the Lake View Apartments (formerly the Lake View Motel), 17690 W. Akron-Canfield Road, was arson, said John Morris, Berlin Township fire investigator.
Morris said the fire was ruled arson based on eyewitness statements to firefighters during the fire, physical evidence and an investigation.
About 50 firefighters from 10 fire departments fought the blaze, which did an estimated $220,000 damage at the nine-unit, one-story building and took three hours to bring under control.
Ambulance certified
NORTH LIMA -- Margie Brown, head of Beaver Township's rescue squad, announced that the squad's new ambulance has been certified by the Ohio Ambulance Licensing Bureau.
Although it is not required, township officials requested the certification.
Brown also told township trustees at their meeting Thursday that the squad received a state grant of $11,585 for training and equipment.
Trustees also announced that part-time police officer James Rowley also will be a part-time dispatcher.
Police arrest mother
FREDONIA, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said Christine M. Sauer, 39, of Balut Road in Fairview Township forced her two children to fast for 10 days to "rid their souls of demons."
Police said the children, 15 and 16, were allowed to eat only green beans and drink water and that the younger teen was assaulted by Sauer on Aug. 7.
Police arrested Sauer on Monday on charges of simple assault, endangering the welfare of children and harassment and stalking.
She was arraigned before District Justice Ruth French and faces a preliminary hearing.
Police said Mercer County Children & amp; Youth Services is assisting in the investigation.
The teenagers were placed in the custody of relatives.
Girl runs into truck
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 11-year-old South Side girl was in critical condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center after she ran into a pickup truck, hospital personnel said.
Jessica Lewis of Kreiger Lane was playing tag on Windsor Avenue near Kreiger about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, city police reports show.
She ran into the street and into the truck's passenger side.
The driver, a 26-year-old Struthers man, was not cited.
Police said a witness stated that the truck was not moving fast or recklessly.
The witness, a neighbor of the girl's who was sitting in her car at a stop sign, also said the driver tried to swerve to avoid the girl, police reports show.
